Cubbit DS3

Geo-distributed, multi-tenant S3-compatible object storage built around a "Swarm" architecture — encrypted shards distributed across nodes that can span single-site to multi-site to fully geo-distributed topologies. Three-entity design: **Agent** (data-plane node), **Coordinator** (centralized microservices that orchestrate the swarm), **SDK / S3 Gateway** (external access surface). AES-256 client-side encryption, with data fragments scattered such that no single site (or, depending on topology, no single jurisdiction) holds the complete object.

What it is

Geo-distributed, multi-tenant S3-compatible object storage built around a "Swarm" architecture — encrypted shards distributed across nodes that can span single-site to multi-site to fully geo-distributed topologies. Three-entity design: **Agent** (data-plane node), **Coordinator** (centralized microservices that orchestrate the swarm), **SDK / S3 Gateway** (external access surface). AES-256 client-side encryption, with data fragments scattered such that no single site (or, depending on topology, no single jurisdiction) holds the complete object.

Why it exists

European customers face a hard data-sovereignty requirement post-GDPR + 2026 Schrems-III ruling — data has to provably stay in EU jurisdictions, not just in EU regions of US hyperscaler clouds. Cubbit's bet is sovereign geo-distribution as a first-class property: customers control the topology (which sites participate in which swarms), the SDK presents standard S3, and the underlying replication enforces the residency constraint cryptographically. The 2026 framing is "sovereign + geo-resilient by design".

Primary use cases

EU-sovereign object storage for regulated industries that can't store data on US-owned infrastructure, multi-site backup with mandatory geo-distribution, sovereign cloud builds (DIY private clouds via DS3 Composer), telco / utility / government workloads where individual sites can fail without service degradation, and hybrid setups where customer-owned hardware participates in a vendor-coordinated swarm.

Recent developments

Latest signals
  • Worldstream + Cubbit launched Dutch sovereign S3 cloud (joint). Cubbit and Worldstream announced a joint Dutch sovereign S3 cloud offering to address EU data-control and compliance demand. Per Popular Outdoor Sports coverage.

  • DS3 Composer — DIY cloud on top of customer pools. New product that combines an operator's existing storage resources into a single geo-distributed Swarm, turning scattered storage into "an organised, seamless data domain". Per Computer Weekly.

  • Multi-tenant S3-compat datasheet published. Cubbit DS3 is positioned explicitly as a multi-tenant S3-compatible object store for sovereign / geo-resilient deployments. Per DS3 Standard Datasheet.

  • CloudFest 2026 (Germany) joint Worldstream-Cubbit presentation. Cubbit and Worldstream are presenting the joint Dutch-sovereign-cloud solution at CloudFest 2026. Per Cubbit docs.

  • Granular geographic distribution to address 3× storage growth by 2026. Cubbit's architecture incorporates granular geographic data distribution to handle the projected 3× growth in storage volumes by 2026. Per Cubbit technology.

  • Cubbit partnered with Ailanto for Swiss sovereign cloud storage. A Business Alliance Partnership pairs Cubbit's DS3 Composer with Ailanto's Swiss infrastructure, offering flexible service tiers and geofencing to cantonal data-residency requirements — the same sovereign-cloud playbook Cubbit later repeated with Worldstream in the Netherlands. Per Ailanto and Cubbit Launch Sovereign Cloud Storage for Swiss Enterprises and IntelligentTechChannels. (tertiary, two independent trade outlets)

  • Cubbit partnered with CTERA to extend DS3 into enterprise file services. The deal layers CTERA's file services on top of Cubbit's geo-distributed DS3 object storage; Cubbit reports 400+ enterprise customers and roughly $25M in funding as it transitions from its earlier Web3/consumer roots to enterprise storage. Per Cubbit and CTERA partnership for enterprise storage. (tertiary)

  • DS3 Composer adds multitenancy, chargeback/billing, and zero-trust data protection. Beyond the DIY-cloud framing already noted, Composer specifically ships granular multitenancy, chargeback and billing features, zero-trust data protection, and a web-based GUI for deployment orchestration, and can scale from terabytes to petabytes.
